The integrated high-speed rail project between Jakarta and Bandung was developed to reduce congestion between the two cities and promote the adoption of public transportation in Indonesia. Spanning 143 kilometers and incorporating various infrastructure elements, the project presented significant geological and coordination challenges.
These complexities were further intensified by an accelerated project schedule and the constraints imposed during a global pandemic. Previously, similar projects relied on 2D design and conventional survey methods, which led to delays, increased costs, and inefficient construction processes. As a result, PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA) recognized the need for a more advanced and integrated approach to manage the scale and complexity of the project.
To address these challenges, WIKA implemented an integrated BIM and digital twin strategy using Bentley’s open civil design and reality modeling applications.
The team developed a connected digital ecosystem that established a single source of truth, enabling dynamic modeling and the creation of an intelligent digital twin of the entire project. This approach allowed for better coordination across disciplines, improved visibility into project data, and more efficient management of design and construction workflows.
By leveraging digital twin technology and integrated applications, the team was able to enhance collaboration, improve design accuracy, and streamline processes throughout the project lifecycle.
The implementation of an integrated digital workflow significantly improved project efficiency, design quality, and overall coordination.
The optimized workflows reduced inefficiencies associated with traditional methods, enabling more accurate calculations and better design outcomes. As a result, the project achieved USD 185 million in construction cost savings and shortened the construction schedule by six months.
This project established a benchmark for developing open digital building blocks for integrated public transportation systems in Indonesia.
